A New Teacher’s Workshop – Writing and the Visual Arts
An intensive and information-rich workshop for K – 12 art educators, artists, and writers

Designed to instruct on how art can transform students’ writing and improve literacy, this workshop explores the relationship between the visual arts and language. It will consider how  K-12 visual art and language arts teachers can collaborate, using art to generate creative writing in the classroom and using literature to inspire artworks. Viewing fine art can inspire young students to discover their creative talents. Explore the interconnection of writing and the visual arts. So often excluded from the core curriculum, the visual arts can aid in the acquisition and honing of strong writing skills.

The workshop will revisit the ancient tradition of ekphrasis--vivid, written descriptions of works of visual art--and how it can be a tool for developing and sharpening students' writing skills as well as nurturing empathy, attentiveness, and observational abilities. Ekphrasis allows the visual arts to collaborate with language arts and thus regain their essential role in human knowledge. Participants will be introduced to the history and practice of ekphrasis and will engage in writing, sketching, and empathy activities in the Noyes Museum galleries, stimulating new interdisciplinary ideas and collaborations among teachers.

Workshop topics will include:
- Visual presentation with lecture, examples of methods, and projects
- Exercises in empathy, embodiment, and close-looking through consideration of art in the Noyes galleries
- Interpretation: Observation, sketching in the galleries, writing, and discussion
- Reference materials: Information, resources, lessons, and exercises for the classroom will be provided.

This workshop is for teachers working at all levels and across disciplines. No previous experience with art making is necessary. Teachers will use simple and accessible materials to work on productive exercises. The content and activities of this workshop meet with national standards and are widely applicable throughout the K-12 curriculum. This is an enjoyable workshop and a great opportunity to gather new ideas for enriching the curriculum in the classroom, try some creative art and writing activities, and meet other teachers. Light morning refreshments & lunch included.

Please be advised that by registering for an SRI&ETTC workshop you are liable for the workshop registration fee. If your school district does not pay the registration fee you will be billed by Stockton University. If you need to cancel your registration, please see the Cancellation Policy below.

Cancellation Policy

You can withdraw from a workshop at no cost, up until two weeks before the workshop date. Please notify us of your cancellation by mail, telephone or fax. Withdrawals within two weeks prior to workshop date will forfeit half of the registration fee. No-shows on the day of the workshop will forfeit the entire registration fee.
