The Traumatic Loss Coalition for Youth of Atlantic County
provides educators, mental health and law enforcement personnel with a vital, supportive structure for networking to benefit our children and youth. The primary responsibility of the coalition is to provide assistance to school personnel as they manage significant losses and traumatic events that impact the school community.

The New Jersey Division of Mental Health Services (DMHS) has funded the project which is administered by the Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth Program (TLC) at RUTGERS-University Behavioral Health Care.

Helping Children Following School Violence

Please see the attached document for information on helping children cope in the aftermath of the school shooting in Connecticut that has been provided by the central office of the Traumatic Loss Coalition for Youth at UMDNJ.  It may be helpful to send these talking points home to parents and post them on your website to assist them in talking with their children about this tragedy.

Please remind youth, teens and young adults to talk with trusted adults if they are experiencing upset, and point those that are between the ages of 10 and 25 to call the 2ND Floor Helpline – a 24/7 phone resource.  Youth can also email the 2ND Floor if they would rather use their computers to communicate their feelings or concerns.  The number for 2ND Floor is 888-222-2228

Please don’t hesitate to call me or the TLC Central office at 732-235-2810 with any questions or concerns.
